Fireplace: Skim Coat
As part of the (interior) fireplace work, we wanted to re-set the terra cotta squares so that they would be flush to the new tile we’re putting on the fireplace.
There was some discussion back and forth (between us, the masons, and our tile person) as to who should actually set the terra cotta squares. We landed on having the masons apply a skim coat of cement, and to keep the terra cotta squares free (so that the tile guy could set them, when the actual tile is put in).

Skim coat, midday.

Skim coat, end of the day.

Hey Felix, have you done a State of the House post? For those of us following along at home, with all of these individual projects and rooms, it’s easy to get lost in the weeds ;)
Alex (November 22, 2025 at 9:12 am)Hi Alex! Good call. I think you’ve mentioned this before, and a post about the overall state of things would probably help.
To be honest, I don’t imagine folks are really stopping by and reading, as I’ve taken this to be more of a slow rolling diary. I’ll do an update soon.
FYI – lots of big changes recently. Hence the very large gap in terms of updates. Will be trying to catch up.
