Feed Me, Seymour

Today at work, Ben and I were looking over some specs we drew up for an upcoming internal blog app tool. The topic of RSS feeds came up, and we both realized that… while we were familiar with the concept, neither of us really used feeds in any way.

Ben mentioned that Allison was into them, and had her google homepage customized with various feeds. Next thing you knew, we were all over there, checking out her setup and scrambled to set up our own.

OK. Where have I been the past few years? How did I never get into feeds? I’ve been on Mars, apparently, living in a cave with my eyes shut and my fingers in my ears. Sheesh.

I’ve set up my own Google homepage for the time being, and populated it with a few of the sites I not only visit daily, but multiple times over the course of a day: Boing Boing, MetaFilter, and Gapers Block for starters.

I also set up a feed at Feedburner, a site I’m familiar with primarily because of Rachelle Bowden and her blog (she recently got hired on there).

Other than the setup, I’m not entirely sure what to do with this new “feed” of mine. Still a lot left for me to read and learn, but I’m digging it so far.

I’ve avoided RSS and feed aggregators for a while now, thinking that they’d be intrusive and require additional apps, etc. That, or the sites I visit don’t really get updated with that much frequency. But I’m starting to change my tune… and I’m starting to feel like feeds might fold into my daily life a little easier than I initially suspected.

We’ll see how this goes. I sort of miss the multiple tabs and the constant refreshing, but I bet my wrists will benefit in the long run.

PS: Yes, I love Little Shop. Shut up.
