Home Page Experiment – Audio Jingle Added
For anyone who’s viewed the site today, I’ve added in a bit of audio to the main page. It’s a small tune/jingle that’s been knocking around in my head for the past 5 years or so… and a few weeks back, I played around in Garage Band and made a 3-second audio clip of it.
I’d always been intrigued by sites that have a little bit of audio to them (the old NewsToday being one example). I’ve wondered about it some, and decided to give this thing a whirl. I’ve added the tune to the main page (and the main page only), and it now loads up on each view.
Not sure if it’ll stay or go, but just testing it out and seeing how it feels. I’m fond of the tune… but I also realize I’m basically forcing every visitor to the index page to experience this, whether they want to or not.
I like the sound. But this also goes against my particular philosophies about putting the user first, opt-in content, etc. I’m used to (and prefer) inviting, as opposed to telling.
This is a me versus you thing, is what I’m realizing. Technically, this blog here is my house and I can decorate however I want. If you don’t care for the Blacklight Ganja Lion poster I’ve hung up on the wall well then hey, guess what… my house, my rules baby.
But on the flip side, part of what I’m doing here is asking you folks to stop by, to browse around… to spend a few of those precious coins of time here on my site, when so many other things, online and off, are clamoring for your attention. So it makes sense for me to put up things that you like as well.
Thoughts? Playful and fun, or annoying and awful? A nice enhancement to the site, or a total user betrayal?
Is it too loud, too soft? Needs more cowbell? Let me know what you think, good or bad, because I’m curious. I’ve never tried something like this before, so we’ll see how it goes and whether I like it enough to keep it.
And now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go and buy some more Black Light bulbs.
cookie that thing to show up only once a week or something. that’s my suggestion.

g (May 18, 2008 at 2:25 pm)The jingle is cool, maybe it can change once a week or something. Also, i’ve been reading your blog since I saw it on boing boing awhile ago. I really love the flash music videos you made. Would you ever be interested in making one for my band? We are called Craft Club. Best.
Will (May 19, 2008 at 2:35 pm)I’m liking the audio addition… but now I’m starting to wonder if it would be more appropriate to bind it to a Flash banner animation. I swear, sometimes this place feels like a house that’s never finished – just always something else to tinker with and improve. Will – thanks a ton for the kind words about the flash projects. I’m happy to hear you found this place via BB, and even happier to know you’ve been coming back.I don’t really have the time to do much freelance, so I doubt I’d be able to take on a project for your band in the foreseeable future. Let’s talk offline a bit, so that I can find out a bit more of what you’re after. I’ll email you (via MySpace) and at the very least, maybe I can point you towards some other folks who might fit what you’re looking for.PS: I updated your comment, so that it links to your band page.
avoision (May 20, 2008 at 7:56 am)Is it the Macintosh IIsi death chime? Yes, this is an entirely serious question.
nickd (May 30, 2008 at 9:49 am)The chime is my own creation, but I’d be curious to know how close it is to the thing you’re thinking about.I’ll be super bummed if this tune (that I thought was original) ends up being an antiquated .wav sound from two decades ago.
