Fenceless
At one of the buildings behind my apartment, they’ve been doing a ton of renovations for many months now. What used to be a large space is being converted slowly into (I think) multiple units.
The property also has a fairly unique lawn, shaped like a triangle due to the alleys running along either side. It used to look pretty rough, but has recently gotten a makeover – lots of debris (and snowmobiles) cleared out, new grass put in.
Today, I noticed that the fence that ran along the borders has been taken down. I don’t know how long this fence was here, but there were several spots where bushes and small trees had literally merged with the fencework – growing between the gaps and getting pretty big in the process. When they cleared out all the vegetation, there were large hunks of wood still stuck and intertwined with the fence – which, apparently, were deemed too difficult to remove, and just left there in pieces.
It’s interesting to see such space and such green, in a place that used to be filled with mostly dirt and construction materials.
I wonder if any of the other neighbors have seen this yet. And I also wonder if any of them have the same idea as me: to steal out here on a weekend, prior to the building being finished and while the weather holds… and just hang out on the grass. Maybe play a little bocce ball and have a picnic.
I know this is someone else’s lawn, but for now… I like imagining that this is a secret space only I know about.
I’m happy to see the fences down. I hope it stays that way.
