Woodworking 101 at Rebuilding Exchange, Part 4

Last class! This was my desk top, after last week’s glue session. Unfortunately, there’s a bit of a bow to it… but to be expected, I guess.

Today, we mostly worked with the hand plane. Making the seams along each joint a little smoother, and getting rid of any excess/remaining glue.

Liz was sick last week, and ended up missing the session. So she was catching up a good deal today – finishing up the planing, jointing one side, and then doing her glue-up.

The remainder of the class for her was waiting for the glue to dry. And then chiseling off the dried glue. Before we left, she was able to have Erin cut down the sides. And so the rest of her work will be done at home.

During her wait, Liz helped me out with sanding my desk top. I didn’t get all that far either (used the hand plane on both sides, and only got to sand the top ever so briefly).
After class, we had a late brunch at Lula’s, and then stopped over at Home Depot (two of them, in fact). We got ourselves a new orbital sander, three grades of sand paper, and also tracked down a 9″ plane.
Time to set up a workshop at home.
