Decluttering?

This I think is hilarious. My aim, when going about upgrading my computer setup, was to clear up space on my desk. I’ve done that in some ways, but at the expense of a rat’s nest of wires.

I’ve got two Macbook Pros (one personal, one work), plugging into a KVM switch, which in turn plugs into two monitors. Getting two Macs to feed into a single monitor via a KVM switch isn’t too hard. But I had some trial and error with getting two monitors set up.

I ultimately got things working, but at what seems like the expense of a tremendous amount of cabling.

All that said – my eventual goal, now that things do seem to be behaving as expected, is to tuck the actual laptops and wires out of sight. And leave just the KVM and the speakers within arm’s reach.

A part of all this ridiculousness is to try to get some further separation between my work and home life. Up until now, to switch from my work computer to my home computer required physically pulling out two cords from one machine and plugging them into another.

It wasn’t a huge hassle, but just a bit of friction. And enough where, sometimes, I’d skip switching machines and just browse the Internet on my work machine. Which sometimes led to opening email or checking Slack, or going back and doing “a little more work” during off hours.

There are, I realize, more factors in play than just the technology. And a simple switching to another computer isn’t necessarily going to solve things. But it’s a small step. And having a button to literally switch work off seems like a welcome first step.
