So Many Eggs

On the way to visit Julie and Bob for Mother’s Day in Valparaiso, we stopped off at the “Egg House.” This is a house we spotted several years ago, that has a custom-built, self-serve stand where anyone can just stop in and purchase fresh eggs.

The signs on the lawn today: So. Many. Eggs.

The structure that houses the eggs is just a large room, with no one around to watch or take payment. Folks stopping in can grab what they want, and pay for the eggs themselves.

Liz saw this painful note (from the Scott Family), letting folks know that they experienced a pretty serious incident of theft a few weeks ago.

Turns out, someone stopped in and stole all the eggs and all the money. But instead of adding security cameras or anything like that, the family did something unexpected: they put out money in envelopes, asking that anyone who was in need to take from that envelope instead.

It was a fascinating turn, and an incredibly heartwarming note to read. Check out this larger version of the note.

Lots of egg cartons.

Lots of eggs.

What an incredibly compassionate act, and how surprising in this day and age of cynicism and suspicion. I’ve never met the Scott family, but having been patrons of theirs for some years now… I was very moved by their actions. They strike me as good people, and I would really love to meet them some day.
