Early James: Pigsty

I continue to become more entranced with Early James, and his latest album “Strange Time to Be Alive.”

This track, Pigsty, has become my new favorite. I’m not really sure how to classify this – I think there’s probably a specific name/genre. But I’m at a loss for what to actually call this type of song.

Piano ballad? Jazz ballad? Hearing it makes me think of the classic crooners, a dark bar with candles on tables and cigarette smoke thick in the air.

There’s a kind of nostalgia happening when I hear this song (that goes older than the reference to Fruit Stripe gum). The song’s structure feels very classic, but the lyrics are unmistakeably James through and through.

I’m afraid of heights
And you’re afraid of snakes
For once I’ve no fear of falling
As you coil in a defensive state
Won’t you tell me, dear
Do you fear to reciprocate?

I’m a big fan of the lyrics to this song. So good.
