Our Holiday Party

Tonight, Liz and I were hosting a holiday party at our apartment. We both had the day off to prepare, and this cleaning list has been sort of on-going for most of the week.

Though most of the folks who arrived hung out in the kitchen and the dining room, we got the living room all nice and cleaned up.

A view of the spread, and a lot of what Liz had been working on all week in terms of snacks/food. Note that in the center of the table, there’s a Vinegar Pie (which we tasted for the first time while visiting Lisa’s family in Mountain View, Arkansas.

A batch of chocolate Petit fours, hand-made by Liz.

Parmesan Walnut Salad Endive Leaves, a recipe we first tasted at Leslie and Chris’ wine party… and later found on FlavorQuest.net.

These meringues were like puffs of sweet-tasting air. Incredibly light, and really fun to eat. As a topping, there a small sprinkle of crushed peppermint candy on top of each one.

Another batch of the petit fours. Though the icing made them all a bit top-heavy, these were still pretty delicious.

Liz’s fruit cake, in miniature form.

We also had a meatball station, near the kitchen.

Liz also made a huge batch of potato/leek soup. I don’t know how to spell the technical name of it (viscisoux?) but it was rich and a great started for the evening. The moment everyone walked in, I started hustling the soup.
This shot, incidentally, was taken right near the start of the party. We had been working for most of the day prepping, and this was more or less our dinner.

Probably not the best photo to end on, but this is the only one I have of the party itself. For the evening, I was playing host and didn’t really have my camera going. Jake snapped this pic from the kitchen, so at least there’s one shot that’s not of food.
A fun night (though my feet were killing me by the time we closed up shop). We had less folks than we anticipated, but WAY more food – so that worked out well. In addition to seeing a lot of coworkers in a more social setting, we also got to see some old friends and got to hang out with our neighbors, Jason and Miri, a bit more. After the party closed down, Liz and I hung out with Jason and Miri for a bit longer, and even went over to visit their apartment (and dogs) for a little while.
Liz and I plopped on the couch sometime after 1AM, and ended up just nibbling on snacks and decompressing for an hour or so, watching TV. Whirlwind of a day.
