Stunning Kinetic Wave Sculptures – Reuben Margolin

Artist and Maker Reuben Margolin has an uncanny ability to create sculptures that capture the feel of natural movements. Looking at his work, it’s hard not to be mesmerized both by the water-like motion of his pieces… but also by the incredibly complex mechanical components that make the motion possible.

It’s fascinating to get a tour of his workshop, and to see the different sculptures he’s created. But it’s equally fascinating listening to Margolin talk about his process, and how his observations of the natural world end up turning into an assortment of pulleys, gears, and monofilament.

It seems like for every design that I have, to get to that design I would have worked out 3 or 4 designs that didn’t work out. So in one way I feel like I’m just working on the same sculpture, over and over again, in different permutations.

Inspired by the swirls of a canoe paddle and the sine-wave of a caterpillar in motion… Margolin sees the world a little differently than most people. He seems like a fascinating guy that you could just listen to, for hours and hours. And while it also sounds like he’s smart as all get-out, he also strikes me as the kind of guy who would patiently explain every complicated formula… if you asked.

Huge thanks to Juliet, for sending this video my way!

// Edit: Make sure to check out Margolin’s site -he’s got a lot of other neat work/projects posted.
