Skinemax
Though not exactly “Koyaanisqatsi for a generation raised on late night television and B-movie VHS tapes,” Smash TV’s Skinemax definitely triggers a lot of memories from the 1980’s and early 1990’s.
Comprised of short edits spanning such diverse films as Hackers, Pee-wee’s Big Adventure, Brazil, Cool World, Krull, Captain Ron and They Live… the film is quite literally all over the place. “Trippy” doesn’t even come close to the feeling this evokes, but it definitely sucked me in.
I’ll be honest with you – I only made through about 13 minutes, but I was pretty mesmerized. Had I a large quantity of marijuana, I’m sure I could have made it through the entire hour. Still though… the time and energy (and dare I say love?) that must have went into editing this is kind of mind-boggling. The more I watched, the more I saw a lot of repetition in the actions and decisions made in the editing.
Watching this was a bit dream-like, in that you were given snippets of movies that you only half-remembered. Imagine all the movies you’ve forgotten about coming together and flashing before your eyes, in 3-4 second bursts.
