Donnie Trumpet and the Social Experiment, Featuring Chance the Rapper: Sunday Candy

I came across this song early yesterday morning (via MetaFilter), and I’ve been stuck on it ever since. I’m not big into rap, but this song really grew on me as it’s a blend of so many things: it’s got a 50’s retro vibe, the smart and fast-paced lyrics, and the incredibly catchy chorus.

Lyrics like this really stood out to me:

I like my love with a budget, I like my hugs with a scent
You smell like light, gas, water, electricity, rent

My ear is not well tuned to fast lyrics, so I only seem to catch every other word. After I looked around and delved into the lyrics, I found myself liking the song even more. It slowly dawned on me that the whole song is really a love letter to Chance the Rapper’s grandmother. And it’s just awesome.

I’ve listened to this song a ton since yesterday. I’d stop playing it if it would stop making me smile so much.
