Spot the Drowning Child

Spot the Drowning Child
is a very eye-opening (and incredibly stressful) website where the visitor is shown a YouTube video of a crowded swimming pool… and then asked to identify the child who is drowning.

Using actual footage that showcases moments where Lifeguards stepped in to save someone drowning, users are tasked with spotting the problem before the lifeguard does.

The Instinctive Drowning Response is what people do to avoid actual or perceived suffocation in the water. And it does not look like what most people expect. There is very little splashing, no waving, and no yelling or calls for help of any kind.

Until these videos, I never really understood the complexity and difficulty of being a lifeguard. Prior to learning about the drowning response, I don’t think I would have caught many of these incidents until it was too late.
