No Right Way to Handle This No Left Turn

noLeftTurn
On the way in to work this morning, Liz and I saw a mess of a setup near 55th and Lake Park Avenue. There was a huge block of concrete in between lanes, and a “No Left Turn” sign – indicating that people could not turn left onto Lake Park Avenue.

Unfortunately, the early morning snowfall covered up the “No Left Turn” sign. And the left turn arrow was still functioning, so people naturally just assumed it was business as usual.

To make things worse: some people would drive around the large concrete block… but others would take the left in front of the concrete block, which effectively dumped them going the wrong way, ever so briefly, on 55th. Enough people had gone in front of the block so as to carve our what appeared to be an official lane.

At one point, there were two different cars trying to turn left onto Lake Park Avenue, both of them jockeying for position while in the middle of the intersection. In the short time we were near the crosswalk, it was chaos for anyone who tried to turn left.

To be honest: I’ll be surprised if there are not any car accidents on this corner today.
