White Rabbit Creamy Candy

Liz and I got onto the topic of candy from our childhood, few days ago. And in a fit of impulsive online shopping… I was able to track down this old, random candy that I remember having at my grandmother’s house many, many years ago.

What I remembered of the packaging: it had a white rabbit for a design/logo. And it tasted really good. But there was outer, paper-y wax-y kind of coating that you had to suffer through, before you got to the good stuff.

It tasted like a thin layer of paste or glue. Once you got past that, it was fine and tasted like a vanilla Tootsie roll. But man, it’s like this bouncer at the door you have to get past first, before anything fun happens.

Oh, Internet and Amazon – how I love you so.

A perfectly fine looking, ordinary looking piece of candy. Until you unwrap it…

And there’s all this stuff around the candy itself. At a glance, it looks like dried skin just flaking off. Which is absolutely unappetizing.

I have no idea what the substance is, and even less idea why it’s even necessary.

Again, it feels like the kind of confection made by a stern parent trying to teach his kid a lesson. “You can have a piece of candy, but by God you’re gonna work for it.”

// Edit: Apparently, what’s old is new again. I guess we missed the resurgence last year, when this candy made its way into cocktails and macarons.
