Matisyahu: Crossroads

This is an odd ritual. I started listening again to Matisyahu, when I started trying to run again. And when I say “again,” it’s loaded… because I apparently only listen to him when running.

It may be part of the ritual. But I’ve gotten used to the first three songs from his album Spark Seeker playing as I do my initial 30 minutes.

This time around (and boy, has it been a while)… I’m finding myself more drawn to the first song on the album – Crossroads. In particular, the song has a longer, slower intro… but when the song gets to the phrase “These lies have got me tired”… that’s where I definitely feel like running.

I’m sky scraping
They stay chasing
I’m like a raisin in the sun
I’m running from death’s invasion
They’re done, I’m going gray
I’m still young having mystic visions
Of the one, I hear the hum, the melody comes

Looking back to one of the earlier times when I tried running (yikes, nearly a decade ago)… I was listening to this album.

But I’m also surprised at this post, where I talk about running for 20 minute stretches at a time. And switched from music over to podcasts.

While the runs have gotten a little easier for me, it’s usually the later weeks that I really struggle with. It will be interesting to see how well I ramp up, or how difficult it is, this time around.

I’m expecting to move into a heavier, “push through” soundtrack in a week or two. And perhaps eventually, I’ll get back to podcasts. Five minutes nonstop seems like a lot, and can’t really imagine 20+ minutes at a stretch.

But I guess I did do that, once upon a time.
