Valentine’s Day: Dinner with Family in Chinatown

Mid-week, I got a text from my sister inviting us out for a dinner on Valentine’s Day. They were trekking in town with Jasmine and Jahnu, as well as my folks. And they were all meeting up with Nathaniel’s brother and dad.

As Liz and I got closer to Chinatown, we noticed that the streets were quite packed/busy. Now it’s been a minute since I’ve been out on a Saturday, but the two of us were both in agreement that there was just a lot of cars out and about tonight.

We ended up getting near the restaurant, and all the streets looked gridlocked. And to top it off, the drivers were all just crazy (cars would push into intersections, and then remain trapped in the middle while oncoming/cross traffic just drove around the vehicle).

Imagine the worst possible drivers, moving at the slowest possible speed. Absolute chaos.

There was no street parking to be found, and the pay lots near the entrance to Chinatown were all closed due to being at capacity. Liz and I got lucky, and found a slow side street about 5 minutes away… but it took a while for us to actually park.

Inside at dinner. It was challenging to talk, as the music was loud and the table was large. But we chatted some about potential travels, and Jahnu continued to practice some of his Chinese with my mom.

We ordered a fairly accurate amount of food, despite folks showing up at different times. Nathaniel’s brother Gabe and their dad were fighting traffic getting here, and we were able to have the food ordered prior to their arrival.

Nathaniel was fighting a brutal trek from the suburbs, and was having trouble finding a parking spot. Remember I was telling you how crazy it was? His brother Gave lives nearby, and ran down to trade spots with him – taking Nathaniel’s car back to his apartment, and getting a Divvy bike back… so that Nathaniel could come inside for the dinner.

Despite the crazy commuting, it was nice to be able to gather the family together on short notice. And for us to share an early Chinese New Year meal together.
