Relocating the Furnace

Despite the heavy snowfall, Bob trekked over to Hyde Park early in the morning… and we set about relocating the furnace… once and for all. In addition to simply moving the unit, Bob also had to direct the vent to the opposite side of the machine, replace the switch, patch the existing return, cut out a new return, adjust the vent, and re-pipe the gas line.

While all this was going on, the furnace would have to be turned off. But we still had a decent amount of heat in the basement, thanks to the trusty old torpedo. While we’ve used this guy many times so far over the winter… I’m happy to say that today should be the last day we’ll see him in service here!

Furnace, propped up and getting a little work done. Vent has been moved to the new side.

Officially breaking out the brake – Bob fabricating a patch for the old return.

The old return patched up (left), and the new return cut.

And the furnace is moved! We had a really long day at the house (despite concerns, mid-afternoon that the snowfall might cause us to quit early) – but it’s nice to know that this furnace is finally situated in its permanent home, and won’t be going anywhere, anytime soon.
Though there’s still more to be done, this feels like a significant milestone for us. On hearing the heat kick back on again, after being off for hours… I told Bob: That’s a wonderful sound.
