Hexiled: iOS Word-Spelling Game with Perfect Timing

Hexiled
is a free word spelling game that really has an excellent sense of timing. I’ve found it to be really perfect as a game you can just pick up and play quickly (and also something you can set down, with similar ease).

There are three game types: Escape, Explore, and Survive. So far, I’ve only really played the “Escape” game, where you start in the center of a mass of letters and spell your way out to the edge. You’re working against a timer, and the game adjusts to your skill level (each one is around 1:30 in length).

The timer seems to be just right in its difficulty: I’ve lost a few games due to the time running out, but not so many that it feels frustrating. The “Escape” game is excellent for a burst of adrenaline, and ideal if you literally want to just kill a minute or two.

The other two game types are unlocked after a set number of games are played. Finish 100 games, and you can play the “Explore” game type (where there is no time limit). Finish 500 games, and you get access to the “Survive” game type, where spelling words adds time to the clock.

Of course, since Hexiled is free – you can unlock everything for $1.99 within the game. It’s incredibly well made, with lots of geeky stats and definitions at the end of every round. Personally, I’m content to keep plugging away as I don’t have a huge itch to play the other types. So far, the “Escape” version has been really great for quick fixes.
