Street Signs and Signs of Times Gone By

This morning, Liz and I went out to Promontory for an early breakfast. On our way there, we noticed that the street had worn away to reveal a train track underneath.

We’re close to the Metra tracks, but those trains are a good half a block away (and much higher up). I wonder what used to be in this spot. I never noticed it before, but you can see the line where the tracks are still probably situated, all the way down the street.
A week or so ago, Liz and I watched the first episode of a great series called “How We Got to Now,” hosted by Steven Johnson.
It’s a really interesting concept, and the first episode focuses a good deal on Chicago. Ever since we watched it, I think both of us have walked around with a newfound respect for what might be right under our feet.
The show is on PBS and Netflix – and very much worth watching!

After breakfast, we were roaming around Chicago and doing some photos for Liz’s blog. During one of our many stops, she drove me down Madison Park Avenue – a little hidden block that’s easy to miss unless you know where it’s at.
While we stopped to admire the houses, I took a photo of this great sign, posted near the middle of the circular avenue, as a means to help people navigate.
