Empty Buses

Most evenings, Liz and I like to end the work day by sitting out on the front steps. We catch a little sunlight, get some fresh air, and break the monotony of being cooped up inside (working on our computers).

During these moments, a University of Chicago bus usually goes by. And for the last few weeks, whenever I can peek into the bus itself… it seems like it’s totally empty.

Which makes sense, given that most students are isolating or avoiding campus entirely. But it seems that the buses still need to be available, just in case. And the drivers still need to drive around, even if there are no passengers.

I’ve been thinking on this each time a bus goes by, but tonight was the first time I had the reflexes to snap a photo. And wouldn’t you know it – I happened to catch someone walking by on the sidewalk. Not sure if that adds or detracts from what I was after.

Seeing all these empty buses, day after day, reminds me that a lot of us are staying put. And remembering what it was like to travel.
