First Fence Post

Big day for us. Liz and I went out to brunch in the morning, stopped at Home Depot for some supplies. And on arriving home, decided to take a power nap.

And then, late in the day… we got to work installing the first fence post for the backyard.

We have one post hole near the corner of our house, but that one made us a bit wary for our first post. So instead, we chose the post hole near the edge of our porch. And decided to use that as our starting point.

Liz, hauling some bags of Quikrete fast-setting concrete. I’m technically not supposed to handle anything over 25 pounds, but I tried to help out where I could. I know I risk more injury to my back, but it’s incredibly difficult to just sit back and watch/expect someone else to do all the labor.

We have a (rough) line tied to our neighbor’s fence. We’re also using Postmaster posts, which is the same thing our neighbors have – so the goal is to build up to theirs, and attach our fence to the post at the edge of their yard.

For the height of our fence, we decided to make it flush with our back porch (just slightly about 6′, which I think is code). Our plan is to have a 2×6 top board that will sit on the top of the fence… so I made this rough jig to help identify how high we needed the post to be. Worked out pretty well!

As we were finishing up, there was a very bold bunny that came down the driveway. Earlier, the bunny had walked right by Liz as she was standing still (coming within a few feet of her).

I was in the space under the back porch, and happened to catch a glimpse of this guy as he ventured back into the yard.
