A Loud Visitor, Late at Night
I walked outside to the back porch briefly, right before bed. I wanted to step outside for a spell, and just take in the evening. There wasn’t anything special going on, and it was particularly hot out – but I just wanted to be outside, momentarily.
On coming back in, I heard a large racket against the Visqueen along our kitchen walls. It sounded like a small animal scratching, for a moment.
After some investigation, a (large) butterfly emerged and was flapping around the kitchen. I want to say that both of us were quite startled.
It landed along the brick chimney, and seemed fine to just hang out there. So I got a small step ladder, and went up to meet it.

I dislike killing things, even insects that are in the house. I’m happy to say that I was able to trap this guy in some tupperware and safely transported him back out to the backyard (he made an awful ruckus when I first captured him, but eventually calmed down).
I’m not sure what this guy is. Monarch butterfly? The colors don’t quite seem to match, but the size of him seems to suggest butterfly. I’ve seen some very large moths, but few with this much deep color.
Either way: after my brief visit outside, I found him on his brief visit inside. And we both went back outside, together.
