Counting Crows: Round Here
I’m not sure why, but rather suddenly – I started to think about Counting Crows. There are only a few songs I know of theirs (the super popular ones). But for some reason, the song “Round Here” came to mind. And I started looping it a bit.
I had it playing on repeat, when I was running in Whitehall (which, I’ll be honest, is a super weird song to have playing while you’re running). But here we are.
There’s a strong sense of nostalgia with this song. Hearing it takes me back to college – I have an image of a house I lived in off-campus, a large U-shaped couch in the living room, and a very old television with MTV videos on the screen.
A lot of the words evoke a sense of place, of that particular place and time. My roommates all had wildly different tastes in music. But I recall listening (watching) the more popular songs on the television… and this one was from that era.
‘Round here, we all look the same
‘Round here, we talk just like lions
But we sacrifice like lambs
‘Round here, she’s slipping through my hands
The weird thing for me? This video doesn’t quite click with what I have in my memory. I have visions of the lead singer in a city setting, but I have zero recollection of this guy in the desert with clocks.
I’m fairly certain I watched this video a lot when I was younger, but almost 80% of it feels alien to me. The song though, I do remember.
