Playing with an Infrared Thermometer

A few weeks ago, Liz picked up this Infrared Thermometer, to help gauge temperatures around the house. It’s been neat to use it, to test for drafts, and to help us identify places where we might need to add some additional insulation.

It’s a fun thing to play with, as it shoots out a small red dot to let you know what you’re measuring. Here, for instance, I can tell that the floor in our kitchen area is a cool 69 degrees.

Whereas over by a vent in the main entry area, it’s clocking in at 78 degrees.

And for the record, a Phineas bunny measures at around 76 degrees.
This thing is fun.

Felix – you should check out one of the thermal cameras you can attach to your phone. Seek Thermal makes one you can find on Amazon, or eBay. FLIR also makes one which I think is a little better – but also a little more expensive.
I own the Seek Thermal one for Android, and it’s more than sufficient for what you would be using it for (some of the actual numeric temps may be off a degree or two but the picture shows everything in relation to itself and that is still accurate) Although I only use it a few times a year, it’s amazing to use every time I use it.
You can use it to find drafts, water leaks behind walls, find un-insulated places, see studs through drywall (on exterior walls mostly) all sorts of things. You can scan a wall all at once instead of 1 square foot at a time.

Amazon has these for around $250, but you can find them on eBay more in the $150 range
Scott (January 19, 2017 at 5:54 am)Thanks, Scott! The price is a bit outside my budget right now, but wow is that cool! I can definitely see an advantage in scanning a larger surface area all at once.
Of course, the Seek Thermal attachment doesn’t give me the ability to make “pew pew pew” sounds, as I pull a trigger… so there’s some tradeoff there.
Thanks for the link and the info!
