Bunny Bonding: A Serious Injury

So a bad thing happened tonight. Liz was having a bonding session between Hugo and Penny, and things got bad. Like, really bad.

I heard Liz yell “No!” a few times, and then I heard her scream. Really loudly. And when I ran over, she was trying to get the bunnies separated (they were having a bit of a tussle).

Once I got them back in their own pens, I learned that Liz had tried to prevent them from attacking each other… and she had gotten bitten and scratched, because her hand was in the way.

This is her hand, after a bit of cold water and some alcohol. It’s difficult to see, but the wound is really bad. In Liz’s words, what you’re seeing here is like “a flap of skin.” That’s how bad the injury is.

This was from Penny.

A bit afterwards, we realized that Liz also had other injuries, from scratching. Also from Penny.

A large bandage for a large wound.

And true to brand, Liz was resting in bed… but still trying to knit despite her finger injury. Because of course she would still keep trying to knit.

When we tell people about the bunny bonding process, and how sometimes it’s useful to have a “screen” to protect them from one another… we get some chuckles. The idea that bunnies could attack or hurt one another probably seems silly to folks who are not around rabbits all the time.

But as you can see from these photos – when they want to attack, they can do some serious damage. Liz has been hurt before, but never as badly as this.
