Basement Work, Yard Work

Super busy morninng today. I got up early, and was out the door by 8AM. I headed over to Lowe’s and loaded up the car with 10 bags of mulch. After getting home and stacking them by the back of the house, Liz and I then went out and did our morning run.
On Saturday, Liz and I walked outside to find that someone had taken one of our rabbit lawn ornaments… and placed it inside the fountain, in our front yard.
It’s still amazing to me that this area was once overrun with day lillies, and that it’s been transformed into a real yard again.
Liz ended up sweeping out the leaves with a broom (she didn’t want to risk damaging her plants with a rake), and I ended up using two dustpans to transport everything from the ground to the bag. It turned out to be a pretty good workflow.
Not sure what this guy is. He seems way to small/thin to be an actual earthworm. Liz spotted him, and at first I thought it was a small leaf stuck on a spiderweb. But it’s definitely a worm of some kind. Liz has a theory it’s a tapeworm, but neither of us has a clue what this guy really is.
The front yard really is a lovely thing to see. I’d argue it’s the nicest looking plot of lawn on the block, but then… I’m a little biased in this regard. I am still awed when I think about how this all used to look, before Liz and Julie tackled it.
After dinner with Liz’s folks on Sunday evening, we walked home in the rain to discover the yard was awash again with earthworms. See those long lines in the soil? Earthworms, every one of ’em.
Here’s thing with some of the flowers that have come up: the tulips in particular are really big! On just a casual glance, the yard has a lot of color. But once you start staring at the tulips, Liz pointed out to me just how large/tall they actually are. And they’re huge!
I like this photo because it captures a lot of what we do, when we arrive home. Which is namely: pausing at the sidewalk, and looking at all the flowers that have started to bloom.
Liz spent a lot of the afternoon, working on cleaning up the front yard. While she did a little bit of work on Friday, today was the super-intense cleanup day.
Liz had a day off on Friday, and I arrived home to find her working in the yard. On Julie’s advice, the yard was left untouched (to provide cover/warmth until the cold finally passed). Now that it’s warmer out, Liz wanted to give the front yard a little more attention.
Today, on arriving home after work, Liz was delighted to see a few bits of green – poking through the ground. Our yard has been buried under snow lately, but with the warmer days… it seems like we’ve got some plants waking up.
At least once (if not more) every evening, someone will mention the yard to me as they pass by. They’ll say things like “Looks great!” or “Looking really good!” And each time that happens, I say “thank you” but I feel the need to correct them regarding their praise. I’m the guy holding the garden hose, but it was Julie and Liz who did all the hard work.
Saturday was a big push to focus on our front lawn. It’s been sitting in a fairly blank state, ever since Liz and Julie powered through the overgrowth and managed the tame the craziness that was here previously.
