Old Records, Old Friends, and Temporary Storage

Today, I was re-arranging some of the electronics on the TV stand. We saw that the DVD player we purchased also plays CDs… so we decided to sell Liz’s 5-Disc CD changer on Craigslist.

A long while back, I’m not sure exactly how… but I became the owner/guardian of Ben’s record player. I think that Justin may have had it for a while, and it came under my care when Justin moved out of his old place.

Ever since then… I’ve kept the record player in a drawer. Ben knows I’ve got it, but we’ve just never coordinated on me getting the thing back in his hands.

To make room for more DVDs, we moved the record player out and set it up where the disc-changer used to be. After a minute or two, I figured what the hey… and decided to hook up the player. After we got it working, I rummaged around to find some records to play.

I don’t own much vinyl at all. Barely double digits. The last time I bought records was with Justin, ages and ages ago, when we drove out to Full Cyrkle Records.

While we were out there, I bought some just for kicks. They’ve been collecting dust this whole time, until today. I was able to get my hands on an on-school portable record player, but that’s sadly broken down (I got it while helping Rob move to a new studio). I’ve been meaning to get it repaired, but it’s just bit sitting around the place, unused, unplayed.

// Edit: Sadly, Full Cyrkle Records closed in 2005.

In my hands is a Leon Redbone album. I got turned on to his stuff thanks to Alex, who played a Leon Redbone album as part of his first day of being married. I remember being asleep on his floor, and slowly waking (along with everyone else who crashed there) to Leon Redbone’s distinctive voice. Everytime I hear him now… I think very fondly of Linda and Alex, and of their wonderful wedding.

The newly placed (and newly plugged-in) record player, filling up the apartment with its rich sound. I should probably get this back to Ben sometime soon.

PS: Hi Ben, I have your record player.
