Working on the Boat, Day 1

One of the Christmas gifts we gave to Liz’s dad last year: a coupon for two “working days” on the boat. We drove up to Michigan this weekend, with the aim to spend some time hanging out… and also making good on our promise.

The boat, on shore and awaiting work.

Looking at the other side (which has been sanded down some). Kirt, showing the material he needs to remove/replace from the seams.

Nearby building.

The truck, setup as an impromptu workstation.

Liz and Kirt, taking a water break.

For the first part of the day, I was mostly a gopher. I drove back to the house to pick up some additional hoses. And then ran out to get some lunch. I did end up working, but only for the second half of our time at the marina. Safe to say that Liz and Kirt did the lion’s share of the work today.

Someone else was also working on a boat. I… am glad to not have his job.

Liz, scraping some of the paint away.

During the course of her work, she got pelted with the paint that Kirt was removing with his scraper. And also got covered with the paint she was removing with an orbital sander.

Very much coated.

A bit later, you can see just how much she was covered. The running joke was that this work was turning everyone into Smurfs.

Closeup shot.

I really can’t get over just how blue she was.

Kirt and Liz, sanding away. Kirt was primarily using his scraper to take the layers of paint down. Liz was using the orbital sander to hit certain areas that were curved.

And me, for my part I was using a belt sander trying to smooth out areas. I was really nervous about taking away too much material… so I went at it a bit slowly.

Towards the end of the day, Kirt showed me a different approach that changed how I went about sanding. Safe to say, I got a bit better/faster after that.

Not too shabby, for just a few hours’ work.

At the end of the day, we had a bag or two of garbage… which we set on the tailgate. There were no trash cans close by, so we had to drive across the marina to a dumpster.

I opted to sit on the tailgate, and had a nice ride over. Decided to take a brief video:
