A Day of Sounds and Memory

Liz and I went out for an early breakfast at Plein Air Cafe. Afterwards, we sat outside and talked about the errands for the day.

As we were sitting there, I noticed that the bells at Rockefeller Chapel were playing.

I’m always reminded of Bernie, whenever we see or pass by the chapel. And though I seldom say it out loud, I do tend to say hello quietly to Bernie, every time I see the building.

And today, as we sat there listening to the bells… I felt like Bernie was saying hello back. Each time I hear the bells, I like to think he’s saying hello back.

Fast forward some time and I’m standing in line at Home Depot, waiting to do some returns. I hear the music playing overhead, and realize it’s Stone Temple Pilots.

It’s hard to hear in the background, but it’s there.

On hearing this, I felt impossibly old. I remember being a Freshman living in a dorm room, staying up late half-drunk watching MTV in the dark. And watching the video for this song at an ungodly hour.

I remember having a similar sensation, walking through an antique mall and hearing Pearl Jam playing overhead. The music of my youth has shifted into the mainstream, and would likely be classified as “Oldies” music at this point.

And while I’m waiting in line to return a batt of insulation, I’m listening to a band that I first heard when I was nineteen. What an odd intersection of age and time.
