Last Day with Daisy

Over the last few days, Liz and I had some hard conversations about Daisy’s health. She’s been more listless lately, and has seemingly spent a lot more time sleeping/napping in the corner.

While her mobility has limited her somewhat, she still managed to get around previously. But this week, it feels like things took a turn for the worse. And after a lot of difficult considerations, we set up a time to take her in to the vet and have her put to sleep.

Tonight, we had our last night with Daisy – and sat with her in the bunny area for a good while.

Dinnertime for Daisy. With her losing strength on one of her back legs, she’s used the other to compensate/balance. What oftentimes results is her having her back leg extended forward, as a kind of balancing arm.

A few nights ago, Daisy did something similar with Liz. And started licking her hand slightly. Daisy doesn’t ever really do anything like this normally… and at the time, Liz took it to be a pretty significant event.

In a lot of ways, she told me later, it felt like Daisy was letting her know it was time. And that it was her saying it was ok to say goodbye. And that she was ready.

As we were talking about this decision, both Liz and I know it’s the right one for Daisy. As difficult as it is to say goodbye, keeping her around is not the best decision for her. She is not comfortable, not overly active, and despite all our attempts with extra food and Critical Care feedings – she’s not been steadily losing weight.
