Rose Tour

Strolled around the backyard tonight, walking with Liz and looking/admiring at all the roses she’s put in.

I continue to be so incredibly proud of this arbor that we built. We argued a lot during the construction, but it’s been a source of beauty and pride ever since.

And as the roses have started to climb, this beautiful looking thing somehow looks even more beautiful.

Liz explained to me how “the third year” for plants is the impressive one. The concept of Sleep/Creep/Leap is that in the first year, new plants are trying to establish themselves. No blooms, and a focus on the root system.

Second year, some potential blooms… but things haven’t reached their full size or potential. Third year is when it’s the plant’s time to shine.

It’s interesting to me to consider the long-term planning, that goes into gardening. I know the espalier apple trees are a multi-year endeavor, but thinking about the flowers on a multi-year cycle was a new concept to me.

The backyard really is something. We oftentimes sit out back at the end of the day, as the light fades. And we oftentimes come out late at night, right before bed, to look at things lit up by the garden lights. What an amazing space Liz has made back here.
