I recently re-watched the first two seasons of Strange New Worlds, in preparation to watch Season 3. And now that I’m mostly caught up, I decided to go back and give Star Trek: Discovery another chance.
I recall liking the show at the start, but things kind of went off the rails further into the series… and enough so that it made it problematic for me to continue watching.
David Friedman writes about Jörg Hillebrand’s preternatural attention to detail, and how Hillebrand noticed that a book in Captain Picard’s ready room was opened to a page that featured a photo of the actor Patrick Stewart, taken in 1968 when he was part of the Royal Shakespeare Company.
For those not familiar with the show or series, the decontamination chamber was an area where crew members would go after away missions. The chamber was designed to remove harmful pathogens, and involved the crew members rubbing medicinal gel over one another’s bodies, while bathing under a blue colored UV light.
That’s the scientific explanation for the chamber. For those of us who aren’t 100% Trekkies and blinded by fandom, we see it for what it is: a bit of visual erotica that aims to nudge this Sci-Fi show a few steps towards softcore pornography.
Here’s a new term I came across: FMV (Full-Motion Video). It’s a kind of video game comprised entirely of pre-recorded videos.
If it sounds a bit dated, well… that’s where you’re right. But note that we’re talking about Star Trek here. And we’re talking about a chance to play this game, for free, online.
We had a fun time hanging out, catching up a bit over dinner and getting our Trek on. And we also ended up watching an episode of the Lower Decks, as a bonus.
I saw that Liz got a new mousepad in the mail today. When she pulled it out from the Amazon package, and put it down next to her old mousepad… I nearly broke a rib, laughing.
For tonight, three bottles were opened: a Rose (from Risa), a Federation Zinfandel, and some Romulan Ale Vodka.
On the cork – a bit of Klingon! At least, I think it’s Klingon? See, this is what I mean about me not being sure how strong of a Star Trek fan I am.
I will say this though: when we all gathered glasses to make a toast, I knew enough to yell out Qapla’.
We got an invite to watch the Season Premier of Picard, Season 3 this weekend. It’s the last season apparently, and our friends/hosts are planning on getting folks together for a viewing.
A viewing, I might add, that also will include a bottle of Chateau Picard (vintage 2386), a bottle of Klingon Blood Wine, and the new Romulan Ale (technically Rye Whiskey). Go big or go back to your homeworld, amirite?
I love fun Star Trek videos, particularly the ones where repetition plays a key role. Here’s a supercut of every time McCoy reports that someone’s dead.
We are, I feel, crossing that thin line between people who enjoy watching Star Trek and people who actively seek out Star Trek related things.
Looking back, I didn’t realize how much Kirk grappled with aging in the first two films. There seemed to be a lot more going on, in terms of family, but maybe that’s just been on my brain since yesterday.
One of the gifts I got her for Christmas was a collection of all the classic Star Trek movies (which also included TNG as well). Despite being a huge fan of Star Trek, she hadn’t seen any of the movies.
A lazy night at home, relaxing in front of the TV. Liz and I were waching Star Trek (currently working our way through the Enterprise series).
It’s funny at first. And after a while, it gets a little unbearable to watch. But push through to the end, as I think the whole experience is rather amazing.
