The Divvy Wreck
Spotted this on the way to work yesterday. It was disturbing to see what appeared to be a car accident, 10+ feet from the actual street/intersection and very clearly in an area designed for pedestrians (and bicyclists).

I was out getting some coffee along 53rd, when I heard some really loud music blaring nearby. At first, I thought it was coming from someone’s car… but then realized it came from around the corner, from a truck that was parked along Harper Court.
With news of the upcoming storm (Chicago is expected to get from 7″ – 10″ of snow, and up to 14″ in some areas), Liz and I decided it would be a good idea to stock up on some food before the weekend. It was a thought that, apparently, everyone else in the neighborhood had…
Earlier tonight, a little after 9PM, I noticed that I had a missed call on my phone. I checked the voicemail, and it was from our neighbors the Browns (Bernie and Carol Jean). In the message, Carol Jean was hoping that it wasn’t too late to call, and that she wanted to see about bringing us over some dessert she had made for us.
I walked over near Treasure Island on the way to work this morning, wondering if I’d see any of the water/flooding that my neighbor Betsy had posted about, online (last night, she had posted some
amazing
videos of a hydrant that had been intentionally opened). My guess was that this was done as part of the pipe work we
saw the other day.
We stopped and asked one of the workers a few questions, and learned that this was a “feeder” pipe, destined for the far suburbs. Smaller water pipes feed the houses in the area, but this guy… apparently transports water out beyond Chicago. And something with the emergency shutoff valve here was broken, or it didn’t work… and it had to be replaced.
On Sunday, we had an unexpected knock on the door from a young guy who was a location scout for the TV show “Chicago PD.”
Apparently, they were in the area and looking for a house to do an exterior and interior shot. The director had not been happy with any of the location choices to date, and they were still looking (and hoping to get a location settled in the next few days).
Met up with Jake and Anais tonight, for a night out in Hyde Park. We gave them a quick tour of the house, and headed over to Jolly Pumpkin, which Liz and I had yet to visit.
This morning, as I was getting ready for work – I looked out the window, and saw a big ciy vehicle idling in the street. As we were leaving for work, I saw three city workers standing in the street, gazing up at the tree.
When I asked her if she knew which tree was being serviced, she pointed to the Mulberry tree! And as soon as I was able, I sent an email with the news to our neighbors Bernie and Carol Jean.
This is far after the fact, but I took these photos a month or two ago… on my way home. The Hyde Park Used Book Sale was being set up, and I passed by the covered boxes as I was headed back home.
One of these years, I’m going to get the spirit back again. And I’m either going to dress up, or we’re going to decorate the house up. In the weeks leading up to the 31st, I never feel like it – but the actual evening of Halloween, I feel the bug.
I was kind of surprised by this, and got a slightly better photo. It made me think that the two of us, though separated by our species, have our little patterns and routines.
I took a few photos, but stood still for fear I’d scare them away. And it’s a good thing I did, because the moment I took one step closer towards them… they immediately flew off.
Going through my archives, I found this old photo of a hitching post – located just across the street from our house. With a home that is over 100 years old, this neighborhood has been here for some time – and this post is an evidence of that earlier era.
