Halloween in Hyde Park

Not a lot of photos to share, this Halloween. With Liz under the weather, she only manned the door a few times over the course of the night. Since she didn’t want to risk being outside too much (still recovering from the flu), I ended up doing a lot of the door greeting and handing out of candy.

On Croissants and the Difficulty of Discerning Intent

I’ve gone there this morning for breakfast, and was remembering an episode that happened a long while ago. As I was paying for my purchases with a credit card, I asked the woman (the owner of the store) for change. I think I may have had a $10 or $20 at the time. She said no to me (and I think she also said sorry), but also muttered something under her breath in French and I heard the word “bank.”

Dinner, Sophy Hotel

For over a year, Liz and I have passed and watched the construction of the Sophy Hotel as it’s been built up, bit by bit. The hotel officially opened a few weeks ago, and before her trip last week… Liz and I decided to have a quick date night dinner, after work, at the hotel’s…

Water Relief Valve

Spotted this near the end of our block, where it seemed like some excess water was being relieved. I’ve spotted something like this a few times before, and the amount of water coming out always varies – sometimes it’s a steady stream, sometimes it kicks out in a strong burst.

No Parking, Seriously

We have yet another series of “No Parking” signs up, but I noticed that they weren’t held up with just string. They were wrapped quite thoroughly in plastic, because I think residents have just gotten to tearing them down.

Water Problems

Yesterday morning, I got an email (we have an active email list for the block), saying that someone had spoken to the contractors who are doing all the street work. Those workers said it was the city’s responsibility. And apparently the city water department had come out yesterday, and said it was the contractor’s responsibility to fix.

Water Rushing Out and Back In

It’s no small amount of water, so to have it rush down here, pool and swirl around, and then just seemingly disappear is kind of baffling. I kept expecting it to overflow and rush out, but it just gets here and… goes away.

Early Morning Roadwork

The sound of road work began pretty early this morning, circa 7AM. I know construction crews get an early start (typically arriving on a site by 6AM or earlier and ending around 3PM). But I guess this means we’re in for a lot of heavy thuds and beeping trucks for the next few weeks.

Roadwork Begins

There are two huge mounds on either side of our driveway, and a heavy, metal plate lining our driveway to the street. Guessing there’s a sizable hole underneath there.

A Note Of

I can’t tell if this was meant to be more of an official warning, for liability reasons. Or if perhaps someone just tripped one too many times, and decided to take matters into their own hands.

Blackout, Revisited

he power went out around 5PM. Liz and I whiled away some time on the front steps, sipping on some wine. We reported the outage, and were receiving text alerts as to the status. We heard an estimated time for the fix would be 8PM. When 8PM rolled around and then passed, we got another update: 2AM.

Lost Dove

Poor Bobo. The fact that the kid who drew this out referred to him as “hand sized” is just heartbreaking.
