MyKey: Sweet Tooth
“Tastes like Skittles with a cigarette
Break me off a piece of something you’ll regret
And if only I’d known, I’d have taken the road less sugar-coated”
“Tastes like Skittles with a cigarette
Break me off a piece of something you’ll regret
And if only I’d known, I’d have taken the road less sugar-coated”
I recently was reminded of the band Smallpools, and how much I liked their song “Dreaming.” I revisited the album this song appears on, and found myself also listening to “Killer Whales” on a loop.
“I went to the doctor, guess what he told me
Guess what he told me
He said, ‘Girl you better try to have fun, no matter what you do’
But he’s a fool”
There was a feeling that it wasn’t me who was shoving the song in everyone’s face, it was the rest of the world, and I was kind of like, “It’s okay! You don’t have to play my song so much! Play some other songs! We can listen to different music!” I’d show up at commercial music stations and they’d be like, “The star has arrived!” And I’d be like, “I’d like to hear some other music, please.”
“What a sophisticated space
What a well educated population
What socialite would go donate
What it takes to own this place for sixty days”
“I’ve called Persephone
by the name purse-a-phone
Greek goddesses aren’t what
you grab when leaving home”
Breaking down on my birthday
Zero to sixty by Thursday
Really should have fixed my rear view
I backed into my teacher at the drive thru
Now she’s so banged up but I just can’t lie
I’m not sure what the proper genre would be for this music. I’ve heard hints of Dr. Dog here and there, but I’m not sure if that’s accurate. It’s pop for sure, but there’s something about these songs that really just reel you in.
While the video is a bit much (and a little too on the nose for me), I did find myself thinking back to the passing of my Grandma Phoebe. And in particular, the very long night my sister and I stayed at her bedside overnight.
I fell down a rabbit hole today, watching a ton of videos by The Hood Internet. Their project, ’79 – ’99, is just phenomenal and a ton of nostalgia and fun and good feelings, all rolled up.
“You are the one
I wanna watch it all burn down with
You are the one
I’d say I love you with my final breath
You are the one
If I could only have one last wish
When this life’s done, we’ll share another one after death”
I happened across this music video by KIRINJI, for a song called Jikan ga Nai (There’s No Time)… and it’s absolutely fantastic.
I have this tendency, whenever I find a new song I like a lot… I’ll eventually turn to YouTube, to see about listening to a live version of the song. Invariably, there are videos from other people doing covers of the song – and I go down a bit of a rabbit hole.
On first viewing, I thought the story was a kind of time travel thing, where the older man in the video was present day… and the couple was from an earlier time. When I realized they were different people, I thought “Oh, you bastards.”
“So long to my ocean home
So long to my dear sea, I’m going home
Wash my face in the salty water
I’ve got a date with the captain’s daughter”
